The MSC Software download will be available at approximately 8:00PM Pacific tonight (July 27, 2010).

All eligible Workshop participants will receive an E-Mail with information on accessing the MSC Software Download Center. If you have any problems, please reply to this message in the Forums so that all participants will benefit and it will avoid repetition.

Some suggestions that will save you time:

Only Microsoft Windows versions of the MSC applications are available for the Workshop.
Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista OS are supported.

Both 64-Bit and 32-Bit versions are available (download and install only the appropriate version of Patran 2010; use 64-Bit if you have both a 64-Bit Hardware and 64-Bit Windows OS; otherwise use 32-Bit version.

MD-Nastran 2010 and MARC 2010 have a single installer that supports both 32-Bit and 64-Bit.
MD-Nastran R3c will not be used but is provided for legacy purposes.

The first file is a set of specific instructions for installing the software in conjunction with this Workshop. The file is
MD Nastran Edition for Stanford - Installation Instructions
Use these instructions as a general guide, but do not try to match every menu exactly. This file has not been updated with 2010 versions that have been recently released. Use the directory locations shown.

To minimize the download time, you can be selective in the files you download for use with Mic-Mac/FEA for MD-Nastran. You can make another download later for remaining applications.
If you mark the checkbox (upper right corner) for the specific applications you want to download, a Batch download is started. This will run unattended until it is complete and this is the easiest way to do the download.

Download first:
Excel Spreadsheet - Mic-Mac/FEA for MD-Nastran on the Stanford Workshop software download

Next, on the MSC Software Download Center (about 3GB to 4GB download)
* MD Nastran Edition for Stanford - Installation Instructions
* License File - use instructions to set environment variable MSC_LICENSE_FILE
* Patran 2010 (pick either 32-bit or 64-bit installer); . 1.3GB download
* MD-Nastran 2010 (combined installer); 1.5GB download
*Any associated PDF files for additional information and reference

* MARC 2010 - may be downloaded later for Composite Delamination, Damage & Failure applications - 0.84GB download

When you install, take default locations and generally do the Full Install.
For installation, you need more disk space:

* Patran 2010 - approx. 2.3 GB install
* MD-Nastran 2010 - approx. 4.4GB install
* MARC 2010 - approx. 1.5GB install

MSC Software - MD-Nastran for Stanford Edition - Workshop III

Kim Parnell's picture

In working with Mic-Mac/FEA for MD-Nastran today after the presentation, I realized that a few minor updates are needed to work smoothly with MSC Patran 2010 and MD-Nastran 2010. I will post some updates in the Software section after the modifications are complete. I will also post another message here to let you know when it is available.

For instance, always use the currently installed Patran version.
Use Patran 2010.1.2 in Workshop III, July 2010
So check and update: Cell B15 and A20 in the Mic-Mac/FEA v4.7 for MD-Nastran spreadsheet to use: “C:\MSC.Software\Patran\2010.1.2\bin”

With the Presentation notes for July 28th, 2010, I will include some example files to help get you started in working with these tools.

Thanks for your patience.

MSC Software - MD-Nastran for Stanford Edition - Workshop III

It has been a little more complicated than I thought to update the Mic-Mac/FEA for MD-Nastran to Utilized Patran 2010.1.2 and MD-Nastran 2010.
Small changes, but requires some careful looking and tested to be sure all is working smoothly. But that is the nature of software!

Sorry for the delay to all the participants, but I expect to finish either later today (Friday, July 30th) or this Weekend. Some help is coming from Pranav in Nepal on the Excel macros.

You will be largely operational just by making the single change in the spreadsheet of:
Changing Cell B15 to: C:\MSC.Software\Patran\2010.1.2\bin
(assuming you have used the Default Installation Path). This will initial Patran 2010.1.2, and create the Plate with Hole FE model in Patran using the Layups, Materials and Loads specified in the Excel Spreadsheet.

The only thing not happening correctly at the moment is the automatic submission of the MD-Nastran FE analysis, and the automatic summary of the results.

You can output the MD-Nastran input file from Patran by going to the Analysis Menu, and changing from the default of "Full Run" to "Analysis Deck". Run the MD-Nastran analysis using the MD-Nastran 2010.1 Icon on the Desktop and the resulting openhole.bdf file as input written from Patran.

The analysis will produce a series of files. The key Post-File you want to use for post-processing in Patran is openhole.op2
This file includes the Disp, Stress, etc. and the Failure Indices on all layers. Other quantities are computed from these Post results using the Patran PCL Macros (will happen automatically soon, but the interested Participant could dig into it a bit!! This would be the latter part of the overall

*Patran Command Language (PCL) macro file: OpenHole_A_SR_Nastran.pcl

Once it is fully operational again with the 2010 MSC versions, this macro reads the parameter files written by Excel, creates the model, runs the analysis, opens the post-file, computes Strength Ratios and some additional post results, then brings the summary plots back into Excel.

MSC Software - MD-Nastran for Stanford Edition - Workshop III

Kim Parnell's picture

One update will involve the Patran file P3_TRANS.ini
This file provides Patran with the path to the appropriate MD-Nastran FEA analysis program.

Alocalcommand2010=C:/MSC.Software/MD_Nastran/20101/bin/mdnastran.exe

Acommand2010=C:/MSC.Software/MD_Nastran/20101/bin/mdnastran.exe

Version=2010

I will provide an update that you can just substitute in and replace the existing:
P3_TRANS.ini file in the default location:
C:\MSC.Software\Patran\2010.1.2

.
If you make these additions to P3_TRANS.ini, then you can actually run the analysis directly from Patran.
Go to the Patran menu:
ANALYSIS
use FULL RUN (the default for Method)
press APPLY at bottom
